Dr Rupert Pretorius is a Specialist Urologist with a sound knowledge of complex surgical skills and extensive experience in urology.
He developed a passion for medicine at a young age, drawn by the prospect of helping others and the joy of discovery, both of which were encouraged by his scientist father and teacher mother. After matriculating from Hoërskool Menlopark (Pretoria) with academic colours for outstanding achievement, he enrolled at the University of Pretoria in 2004, where he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degrees at the end of 2009.
This was followed by two years’ medical internship at the Klerksdorp-Tshepong Hospital Complex and a year’s community service at the Kimberly Hospital Complex, comprising a six-month rotation at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a six-month rotation at the Department of Urology.
It was in this latter rotation that his interest in Urology began to grow and it deepened further when he stayed on in Kimberly for another year as Medical Officer in the Department of Urology.
Then came a milestone in his medical journey. In March 2014 he joined Tygerberg Academic Hospital as Medical Officer at the Department of Urology, then under the leadership of world-renowned Urology pioneer Professor Chris Heyns. Their association was brief, as Prof. Heyns passed away in August of the same year, but his influence left an indelible mark.
In August 2016 he took up the post of Registrar at the same department, where he served until February 2022.
Now, based at Mediclinic Potchefstroom and working out of modern, recently upgraded facilities, he’s excited at the opportunity to put his skills and experience at the disposal of local residents as well as those in the wider North West region in need of scarce specialist urology services.
